Character Natural

This sustainable oak flooring is available in both engineered and solid oak.  On display in Monmouth and Cheltenham Showrooms.

Character Grade  We love this grade - it is how an oak floor should look!  There may be cracks, flecks and rays in the wood and variation in colour - this is what Character is.  Whether engineered or solid you will always get the response "What a beautiful oak floor".  Grading is always a staged process starting at selecting sustainable tree trunks, visual selecting of raw then finally after kiln-drying and production.  ATC offers oak in Prime (which is very clean and often referred to as Smooth), Character and Rustic.  Character grade makes a great floor and is our favourite for the natural, warm and welcoming range of Oak that we offer.

Natural - This is where ATC applies clear, eco friendly Osmo oil to the boards.  All done in house in Monmouth Yard.  Applied to the character grade this will enhance all the gorgeous knots, rossettes and cat's paw marks.  Osmo oil is a natural oil finish that gives the oak a warm, rich and lived in feel and is very easy to  maintain. The first coat applied in-house by experienced ATC Finishers.  Engineered wood is perfect for underfloor heating.  Natural is also available in Distressed and Smooth grades in either boards or blocks

The Natural oak, as displayed in the main photograph on the right was fitted by ATC Floors and Doors in solid boards, random width in The Castle Hotel in the heart of Brecon.  This flooring was fitted throughout the downstairs bar, snug, lounge, dining room and in fact most of the bedrooms.  As both Stephanie's sons were at the local school - Christ College Brecon - they were able to earn their keep and help with the fit along with the First Rugby Team  (carrying all this flooring tested their strength).  We took the opportunity to insulate under the floors in the bedrooms which was very hard as the old beams were all over the place.

ATC also restored the original Ballroom in the hotel.  This work was carried out about 20 years ago and the hotel has had several owners since ATC were there.

After the fit we applied pure, uncoloured, natural Osmo Oil.  Brilliant to work and live with and great for maintenance

Specification:  Character Oak is available in a good range of widths - you can have a regular (all the same widths) or a random (mixed widths) floor.  Available in 140, 180, 220, 260 and 300mm.  All 18/20mm thickness, depending on what we are cutting.  The breakdown is 6mm top-layer of oak on 12mm of Birch plywood and good lengths.  Tongue and grooved all four sides and kiln dried - with a guaranteed moisture content of 9-11% to suit all homes.  Can be glued, fitted onto battens or floated.

Finishing:  If ATC fitting we would deliver with the first coat on, fit the floor and then ideally apply the final coat of clear oil which gives a perfect finish.  If you have your own Fitter we can either supply the oak with the first coat on and the oil for you to apply after the fitting.  Or alternatively with both coats on - but please be aware we would need longer time to prepare as we need the finish to be cured.  Osmo is without doubt the best finish around, it is lovely to use, easy to maintain.  ATC can advise on aftercare and maintenance - all products available from Showrooms or ATC Online Shop

Fixed Quotation:  ATC always will provide you with a fixed price wherever possible, so no hidden costs!  What we would need from you is an idea of where the property is, the size of the room/s, details on subfloor, situation with skirtings and we will ask a few other questions,  We always prefer to glue or nail and not float.

ATC offer a full supply, fitting and finishing service - all works carried out by ATC experienced carpenters and all work guaranteed for 10 years.  All the floors are on in display in Cheltenham and Monmouth:  We are happy to give you a private viewing if you cannot make the normal opening hours.
